STRATEGIC RISK MAPS

The detailed data has enabled UXOIntelligence to develop different datasets and risk maps useful for
various phases in offshore projects. An example is the initial planning of an offshore cable
installation. At this stage the client might only needs relatively general information/data of areas
where categories of mines like “non-ferrous”, “ferrous”, “ground mines”, “contact mines” etc. can be
present as an input when choosing between alternative routes. Buried non-ferrous mines are very
difficult to detect which means very high costs for mitigative efforts to reach decided ALARP level,
contact mines anchor rows can mean costly identifications etc. Another example can be to present
graded risk areas in a wind farm area of interest (AOI) in order to calculate on UXO risk mitigation
costs.

In order to serve the client with a “strategic overview” of the UXO situation in the AOI a “Strategic
Mine Risk Map North Sea” has been developed. This map, based on the assessed “Mine Danger
Area” (MDA) and the density of mines laid in each minefield, presents in color-codes the risks of
encountering mines. On top of this map can more specified GIS-layers be presented showing areas
where categories of mines have been laid.

Another strategic product is the “Strategic Bomb Risk Map Netherlands” which is similar to the mine risk map but with a rougher dataset behind consisting only of the positions where airstrikes during WW2 have taken place.

The area prices for the strategic products are lower than the high resolution cut out from NSMD. This because that the products are designed to give a general, easily understood and relevant picture in large areas.
